Should i cut out carbs?

Should i cut out carbs?

Carbohydrates is the only non-essential macronutrient meaning the body could survive without it, but this doesn’t mean that it’s not important.

It’s the primary source of fuel for your brain & your central nervous system.

By eliminating carbs you are:

  • Going to feel really low on energy
  • Along with that you will get huge urges to crave foods that are high in calories
  • If you love carbs like me, you are going to take the enjoyment out of food
  • This then isn’t sustainable which is where things like binge cycles & yoyo dieting occur

On the flip side of this by having too many carbohydrates in the diet for long periods of time will cause elevated blood sugar levels (hyperglycaemia) which can lead to diabetes & heart related diseases.

The amount of carbohydrates you have is dependant on your own unique circumstances (how active you are, the type of exercise you do, what your current goal is etc).

If your goal is weight loss & to improve health you can:

  • Try to stick to as many single ingredient whole foods as you can such as your vegetables & fruit.
  • Portion out carbohydrates using some form of consistent measure each time
  • I would say a good indicator of your portion size being too big is if you’re feeling tired after each meal (spike in sugar levels resulting in a crash)
  • Limit the amount of refined sugar foods that you are eating

Interesting Fact

For every 1 gram of Carbohydrate consumed, you store 3 grams of water. So when someone decides to cut or reduce carbs from their diet & loses a lot of weight, it’s mostly water weight. You can see this come on just as easily when you reintroduce carbs because the cells take in the depleted water. So having a balanced diet & gradually reducing overall calories works best for weight loss as opposed to eliminating a single food group.

I hope this has helped you & if you know anyone that would benefit from this post, share it with them or tag them below!
