Why Should I Eat Protein?
Protein is well known for developing muscle tissue but that’s not the only reason why it’s important.
- Growth & repair (not only muscle but also hair, skin, nails)
- Immune function
- Transport of nutrients around the body
- Cell Structure
- Enzyme function
It is an essentially macronutrient as the body can’t produce all the required amino acids (there are 20 in total, 9 of which are essential).
There are two primary sources of protein in the diet which are animal proteins and plant proteins.
- Animal proteins are often referred to as complete proteins because they contain all the essential amino acids the body requires.
- Plant proteins, on the other hand, can provide all the essential amino acids but often in lower concentrations or perhaps with certain amino acids missing.
The amount of protein you need to consume is unique to your specific requirements (weight, body shape, goals etc). One way to keep your protein intake up is to include a source of protein with every meal you have. It’s also a great source of food to help to keep you fuller for longer as it takes longer to digest. It will reduce your urges for cravings & snacking on things between meals.
I hope this explains a little more as to why the consumption of protein is important beyond muscle growth & as always, feel free to message me if you have any questions. basic understanding of calories & energy balance. This will help you progress with your wDo at least one form of activity a day that elevates your heart rate. This could be as short as a 10 minute walk to a 45-60 min training session.
